What is Total Replacement Therapy?

Total Replacement Therapy is a unique, ground-breaking process that is the result of a team of international specialists combining their expertise in soil biology, soil chemistry, plant agronomy and animal nutrition.

The team has worked tirelessly to closely analyse what makes a farm produce its own nitrogen, sequester carbon, and reduce methane release and chemical leaching.

Our method is based on taking comprehensive soil samples and balancing the farm’s soil to ensure the conditions are right for soil biology to thrive. We then apply a biological activator as a catalyst, which introduces and feeds the biology in the soil.

The result is growing more grass with less synthetic nitrogen, at a lower cost, as well as reducing methane and leaching, and increasing soil water holding capacity.

The Synthetic Nitrogen Nightmare

The conditioning of New Zealand farmers

Since the 1970s, New Zealand farmers have relied heavily on synthetic nitrogen to grow their pasture. They were taught by fertiliser companies that heavy use of synthetic nitrogen is the only way to boost pasture growth and, as aresult, milk production and profitability.

Therefore, there is a widely-held belief amongst farmers that if they reduce synthetic nitrogen, grass growth will be reduced and they will lose milk production and money.

But we are proving that we can move dairy farms through a regenerative, biological, soil-productivity transformation without an increase in cost, while improving grass growth, milk production and profitability.

The Albrecht/Kinsey Soils Program

Decades of research in practice

All the companies associated with Total Replacement Therapy have one thing in common: a belief in the superiority of the Albrecht-Kinsey System of soil fertility.

Dr William Albrecht, born in 1888, was considered the foremost authority on the relation of soil fertility to human health. As chairman of the Department of Soils at the University of Missouri, his research spanned many decades.

His method is based on a system of mineral supplementation. This is applied in such a way that the soil is not harmed and feeds the plants correctly.

The balance between the different minerals is more important than theirquantity. By making use of the principles of soil chemistry, the correct soil structure can be developed. This provides the basis in which the soil biology can flourish.

The system has been further refined by one of Dr Albrecht’s last students, Neal Kinsey.

The owner of Kinsey Agricultural Services, Neal is one of the few people left who still uses Dr Albrecht’s unique calculation and analysis methods.

Advising and operating in more than 75 countries, Kinsey Ag mentors a number of companies in both mainstream and organic farming.

The Albrecht-Kinsey system that Total Replacement Therapy follows builds soil fertility, organic matter and resilience into the soil for long-term future farm

sustainability.
